This week, President Donald Trump made a deal with congressional Democrats to pass a Harvey relief bill that included a three month spending bill, a three month extension of the debt ceiling, and continued the National Flood Insurance Program.
Instead of tackling all of the issues facing Congress this month individually (Harvey relief, the debt ceiling, and a spending bill), congressional leaders met with President Trump to work out a deal that included everything in one package.
According to reports, Mitch McConnell wanted an 18 month extension of the debt ceiling. The Democrats rejected it and would only accept a 3 month extension. This was a genius move for the Democrats. Trump accepted.
Chuck Schumer knows any increase in the debt ceiling will need Democrat votes to get through the Senate, and likely even the House.
By making the debt ceiling expire at the same time as spending bill, congressional Democrats are now in the driver’s seat. They can now demand more of their big government spending priorities to be funded to avoid a government shutdown.
This is instead of whatever big government priorities the Republicans wanted to fund.
Despite Republicans controlling the House, Senate, and the White House, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi once again have shown Republican leadership is powerless, spineless and unwilling to govern.
